Mallard Island & the Legacy of Ernest Oberholtzer: Centering through the Earth and the Arts

February 13 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Professor of Environmental Science Emily Deaver and Associate Professor of English Marianne Zarzana will present “Mallard Island & the Legacy of Ernest Oberholtzer: Centering Through the Earth and the Arts” on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at noon at the Marshall-Lyon County Library.

The presentation will reflect on “Centering Through the Earth and the Arts,” an event held on Mallard Island, Rainy Lake, Minnesota, during the summer of 2017.

Zarzana will read selections from Keeper of the Wild: The Life of Ernest Oberholtzer by Joe Paddock, as well as poems that she and other participants wrote about Mallard Island. Deaver will discuss the research she conducted on lichen at Mallard Island and share her photographs of the island. Ernest Oberholtzer was one of the pioneering advocates for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

The same talk will also be held at SMSU at 7 pm in Charter Hall 217 as part of SMSU’s New Work Faculty Forum. A map of Southwest Minnesota State University’s facilities can be found at smsu.edu/map/index.html.
