Great American Read

August 23 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Pioneer Public Television, in collaboration with the Marshall-Lyon County Public Library, will be hosting a THE GREAT AMERICAN READ event to celebrate reading, local authors and to uncover the nation’s 100 most-loved novels. The event at the Marshall-Lyon County Public Library will take place on Thursday, August 23 with free appetizers and door prizes from 6–6:30 p.m., followed by a program from 6:30–8 p.m. The evening will culminate with opportunities for event attendees to create video tributes to their favorite books.

The program will feature an interview and discussion with writers James A. Zarzana and Marianne Murphy Zarzana. James, Professor Emeritus of English, Southwest Minnesota State University, is the author of The Marsco Saga, an acclaimed science fiction series that includes The Marsco Dissident and Marsco Triumphant. Marianne, a poet, teaches in the English Program at SMSU. In 2017, two of her poems were published in the award-winning collection, The Poetry of Presence: An Anthology of Mindfulness Poems.

The event is part of a nationwide effort to promote the love of reading. PBS has published a list of the nation’s 100 most-loved novels to fuel the local discussions. Attendees to the event will be encouraged to visit the interactive website and vote for their favorite book on the list at pbs.org/greatamericanread. A special nationwide PBS program revealing “America’s best-loved novel” will air in the fall.

Many key authors, celebrities and notable figures in the entertainment, sports, news and literary worlds will join series host Meredith Viera on THE GREAT AMERICAN READ. Pioneer will encourage all who attend the event to record their personal stories and connections to their favorite titles.

From The Great American Read website:

THE GREAT AMERICAN READ is an eight-part series that explores and celebrates the power of reading, told through the prism of America’s 100 best-loved novels (as chosen in a national survey).  It investigates how and why writers create their fictional worlds, how we as readers are affected by these stories, and what these 100 different books have to say about our diverse nation and our shared human experience.

The television series features entertaining and informative documentary segments, with compelling testimonials from celebrities, authors, notable Americans and book lovers across the country. It is comprised of a two-hour launch episode in which the list of 100 books is revealed, five one-hour theme episodes that examine concepts common to groups of books on the list, and a finale, in which the results are announced of a nationwide vote to choose America’s best-loved book.

The series is the centerpiece of an ambitious multi-platform digital, educational and community outreach campaign, designed to get the country reading and passionately talking about books.
